The Asus F555LA-AB31 is a mid-level laptop that offers entry-level pricing. While the specs are somewhat “meh” compared to newer laptops, they’re actually quite impressive and functional for the price. Compare this one to any Chromebook (or another subnotebook) and you’ll quickly see that you’re getting a very capable computer for only slightly more than you’d pay for a netbook.

Easy to Upgrade the RAM

This is a relatively “bare bones” system. It has a mere 4 GB of RAM from the factory, but fear not. There’s an empty slot that’s practically begging for you to slide in a nice 8 GB chip and effectively triple the RAM. Once you upgrade the RAM I would also recommend going into the BIOS and maxing out the video memory at 512 MB. This will help a little bit with gaming and other video intensive apps.

Affordable Technology that’s Plenty Powerful

Ok, so this laptop doesn’t have a 6th gen Intel core processor, however, it does have a 5th gen Broadwell chip that is still plenty capable. You aren’t paying for top of the line hardware yet you’re still getting a powerful processor. Upgrading the RAM, as suggested above, only helps to increase this laptop’s ability to multi-task and run modern applications like the Adobe suite and video editing software.

15 Inch Full HD Display

This isn’t just an “HD Display” like most manufacturers claim when they give you a 1366×768 screen that barely surpasses the 720p standard. Instead, you get a Full HD screen capable of displaying 1080p video as it was intended at 1920×1080 pixels. This provides a lot of desktop space and allows you to watch your 1080p content without scaling. The Intel 5500 integrated graphics chip is surprisingly agile, especially when you upgrade the system RAM and increase the video memory to 512 MB in the BIOS, as recommended above.

Connectivity

Nothing too overwhelming to mention when it comes to the connectivity of this laptop. It’s fairly standard for a 2015-2016 model, such as this. You get a couple USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and VGA ports to connect displays and other peripherals. You also get a dual-layer DVD-RW drive for making backups and burning your own video discs.

1 Year Accidental Damage Warranty

Unlike most manufacturers, the 1-year manufacturer’s warranty that comes with this laptop also includes an accidental damage plan. Asus is known for creating excellent products and their warranty backs it up. You’d be more likely to damage this laptop yourself than have it fail due to a hardware problem, in my most humble opinion, so the accidental damage plan is great to have unlike the ASUS A53U.

Customer Reviews

The Asus F555LA-AB31 has a lot of positive reviews online. Most people would have to agree that you’re getting a fair amount of performance for the price. On the other hand, this laptop definitely isn’t going to FEEL like a $2000 laptop when you pick it up, the build quality is somewhat lacking. Most people are surprised by how nice the speakers are for an inexpensive laptop and enjoy the highly functional trackpad and full-size chiclet keyboard.
